Survey: Improved health care for LGBT Nigerians

A community-based NGO in Abuja, Nigeria, is conducting a survey to learn about the experiences of LGBT Nigerians when they seek health care and health information.

Getting access to health care as an LGBT person in Nigeria is often very difficult. Many LGBT Nigerians keep their sexual orientation a secret when they visit hospitals and clinics, for fear of being harassed or denied services. Learning more about this problem is the goal of the survey.

It is a project of the Initiative Supporting Adolescents and Youth in Education and Sexual Health, or ISAYES.

According to Muhammad Awwal Jibril, the project coordinator for ISAYES, the results from the survey, “Inclusion & SRHR Intervention for Young LGBTIQQ,” will help the organization assess the health needs and challenges of LGBT persons, particularly with regard to instances when they experience discrimination and stigma due to sexual orientation.

It will also provide an insight into how the organization can provide quality health care services to people regardless of their sexual orientation.

Findings from the survey will be presented at the forthcoming Pan Africa International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual Trans and Intersex Association (PAI) conference for LGBTIQQ in Botswana in May/June 2018 and in Amsterdam at the World AIDS Conference in July 2018.
