Meet British-born Nigerian gay singer who co-wrote a song with Beyonce!

Uzoechi “Uzo” Emenike who is professionally known as MNEK is a 22-year old British-born Nigerian gay singer and songwriter who have collaborated with many International musical stars such as Beyonce, Madonna, Kylie etc.

So far MNEK has contributed to seven UK top 20 singles which include two No.1’s: Duke Dumont’s “Need U (100%),” in 2012, and Oliver Heldens’ “Gecko (Overdrive),” in 2013. He also worked with Madonna on her album Rebel Heart and Kylie Minogue’s Kiss Me Once which were both released in 2014.

He has also collaborated with Zara Larson, a multiple award-winning Swedish singer and songwriter to pen “Never Forget You” (2015) a song which has lately been soaring the U.S. Charts.

In March 2015, he shared ideas with Beyonce, which eventually led to his collaboration with her on the song “Hold Up” which appeared on Beyonce’s sixth studio album “Lemonade” (2016 ) earning him a songwriting credit on the song.

On working with Beyonce, he said;

“She is really sweet and really cool, she was really conversational. She was also really sharp. She is that kind of person, she is sassy and sweet, but then she can come out with something really quick as well.”

MNEK is quite hopeful that his collaboration with Beyonce will bring him more opportunities. He said;

“Having the opportunity to work with someone like Beyoncé is definitely going to hopefully open a few doors,” he says. “I’m honored to be a part of that project.”

MNEK is out to his Nigerian parents about his sexuality and said it was not easy and that he still considers it a work in progress.

“It is always quite tough when it comes to talking to your family about it and being like? OK, so I am gay? My parents are supportive. Of course, it’s still a work in progress. They’ll say? It’s just a phase; it’s just something he’s going through right now? You never really know the best way to make them understand, so you just have to live your life anyway”.

The singer just released his new song “At Night I Think About You” which is looking very promising on the charts and receiving favorable airplay. He has also performed the song live on different TV shows.
