Madueke Enwere, a gay Nigerian, has written a guide e-book for homosexual men who are married to women.
In his e-book “The Gay in Heterosexual Marriage (A True Life Story)”, Madueke Enwere who currently lives in Abuja with his wife and children, narrated how he struggled with his marriage to a woman, but with a self-paced journey into finding a solution to reviving his marriage which was already on the brink of failing, Enwere now claims to have found the answer to sustaining a ‘happy marriage’ with a woman without attempting to change his sexual orientation.
Enwere’s e-book promises answers to the many challenges experienced by homosexual men who marry or are intending to marry women either because of religious and societal pressure or who want their own biological children.
What makes this e-book somewhat relevant apart from the fact that it could be sharply considered a disaster based on so many concerns, is the reality that many homosexuals have already found themselves in this sort of situation, and some women do not mind the idea of marrying a gay man with the full knowledge of all possible consequences, sometimes either because they are desperate, or for other reasons.
Also, navigating life and surviving as a homosexual in a hostile environment with homophobic laws is no doubt very depressing and disappointing and some gay men do not have the will-power to push through with taking a stand and living their authentic life.
Also, some gay men find comfort in living in the closet, and portraying themselves to the world as straight, owing to the fact that some may still be battling with internalized homophobia and fear the stigma associated with being publicly identified as gay.
But nonetheless, it is clearly still a matter of choice for any gay man to consider marrying a woman knowing that their sexual orientation will not change, hence the need for this e-book.
But unfortunately, a major pitfall with the self-help e-book is that it fails to address a broad range of issues affecting gay men, especially in such situations, instead, it focuses entirely on sexual health, neglecting to address mental health-related issues such as, living in denial, social isolation, secrecy, which could strongly hamper negatively on their overall well-being.
Also, even though one could feel the rush and epileptic expression with which the series of events were layered in the e-book, there is still some good stuff in it as well as strong lessons to be learned. It does make a good and refreshing read after all.
